Mission New York
In 1999, Rev. McPhail was asked by other leadership to spearhead the Brooklyn March for Jesus. At that time, MFJ was a loose affiliation of about 40 churches that had gathered with their congregants in a once-a-year public celebration of their faith. Rev. McPhail brought in fresh vision, new churches and more participants. It brought to the surface that Brooklyn churches were in need of some structure that would provide a place for pastors to come together more than just once a year, and not merely to work together, but to build relationships with one another.
What evolved was Mission Brooklyn, named in 2003. The motto quickly became "we are here to love on God and love one each other." Soon, national ministries were turning to Mission Brooklyn, i.e., Billy Graham Evangelistic Ministries, Campus Crusade for Christ, Promise Keepers, The Bill Hybels Leadership Institute, to coordinate their projects and enlist the participation of the Brooklyn churches.
Mission Brooklyn was re-named Mission New York in 2005 as the scope of ministry and influence expanded to include the churches and ministry leaders of the other boroughs. Today, over 200 churches participate in various levels in the outreach endeavors of Mission New York. Strategies are discussed and city-reaching efforts are implemented. One such city-reaching event is Pray New York, where Rev. McPhail and the Mission New York pastors and their congregations, "prayer-walked" all 9,400 blocks of Brooklyn, as well as having intercessors pray over every highway, waterway, subway line, bridge and airport of NYC.
Mission New York's most recent outreach is School Reformation Day. Participating churches are assigned within their zip codes to go to their local public schools to pray and reclaim the education system in the Lord's Name. They will drive scripture stakes into the grounds and anoint the gateways of each school. Then, the intercessors will call an 800 conference number and join together in united prayer for school reformation around New York. Jesus is truly enthroned around this city!
